The School of Future Technology (SFT) at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was newly established in May 2021, approved as one of the first 12 pilot schools within the ‘School of Future Technology’ initiated by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China. Focusing on the originality of future science and technology, SFT is committed to establish a talent training mode based on interdisciplinary research, and cultivate innovative elites with forward-looking, global awareness, and the ability to lead the future development.
Concentrating on the development of"Big Engineering,Big Health" as the future strategic industries, SFT relies on the high-quality resources of four national first-class deciplines, including Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, and Automation at HUST; gives full play to the advantages of major scientific research platforms such as Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO), National Innovational Institute of Digital Design and Manufacturing (NIIDDM), as well as National Innovation Platform for the Fusion of Industry and Education in Integrated Circuits; and condenses four future interdisciplinary directions, involving Advanced Intelligent Manufacturing, Biomedical Imaging, Optoelectronic Chips and Systems, and Artificial Intelligence, to explore a new model of talent training with crossover disciplines, the collaboration between science and education, and the integration between industry and education, to cultivate talents who are capable to drive scientific research and future industrial transformation, and to build a training base for future technology leaders.

l High-level interdisciplinary teaching team
SFT has top-notchfaculties and teaching teams under disciplines of Mechanical Engineering (ME), Biomedical Engineering (BME), Optical Engineering (OE) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). ME includes 7 academicians, 11 Chang Jiang Scholars, 2 winners of the National Famous Teacher Award, and 2 national-level teaching groups; BME has 1 academician, 4 fellows of international societies, 12 international talents such as Chang Jiang Scholars and winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 9 national-level young talents, and a number of overseas professors from world renowned universities like University College London (UCL);. OE has a strong teaching team led by winners of the National Famous Teachers Award and high-level talents, including 16 national-level talents such as Chang Jiang Scholars and winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars; AI has 2
Chang Jiang Scholars and winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 winners of the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund, Chang Jiang Young Scholars, and 5 faculties included in the 2018 Global Highly Cited Scientists List.

l Interdisciplinary training model
SFT attaches great importance to solid foundation, by focusing on students’ basic knowledge of math and science, ethical standards for science and engineering, and strengthening the training in mathematics, physics, information and engineering sciences. SFT promotes interdisciplinary integration, by coordinating resources in different disciplines such as Engineering, Science and Medicine, and advancing the transformation of cross-platform research achievements into undergraduate teaching. The school implements the collaboration between science and education, by giving full play to the advantages of key research platforms, including WNLO, NIIDDM, and National Innovation Platform for the Fusion of Industry and Education in Integrated Circuits, etc., building deeply integrated sci-tech practice courses, introducing famous scientists, teachers and cutting-edge research into talent training, and encouraging students to fully participate in projects and mentorships. SFT improves the integration between industry and education, by cooperating with top enterprises to deepen teaching reform, involving syllabus design, curriculum setting, internship training, and joint construction and sharing of training bases.
l Successive undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs of personalized study
According to the future directions for featured technologies, SFT scientifically formulates the ’successive undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs, supports students’ individualized development, implements the personalized curriculum on the basis of "one direction, one program, one student, one program", establishes the course selection system that combines crossover and connection, by which students are able to choose cross-major and cross-department courses, undergraduates can receive cutting-edge education in the early stage by taking graduate courses.
l International training and overseas learning
Relying on international exchange and cooperation platforms such as the Network of International Centers for Education and " 111 Science and Innovation bases” at HUST, SFT advances strategic cooperation with world-class universities, especially the first-level interdisciplinary engineering faculties, and introduces international academic masters to participate in the student cultivation. The School comprehensively improves students' international exchange capability, by promoting the mutual credit recognition mechanism with overseas universities, providing international exchange opportunities for each student, so as to create an internationalized education environment.

SFT condenses the four future interdisciplinary directions of Advanced Intelligent Manufacturing, Biomedical Imaging, Optoelectronic Chips and Systems, and Artificial Intelligence, develops future technology fields such as Intelligent Manufacturing, Intellisense and Intelligent Health, and strives to cultivate senior research and engineering talents who are capable to drive scientific research and future industrial transformation in "Big Engineering, Big Health" as the future strategic industries.
